How much mulch do you need?

Mulch volume equals the bed area multiplied by the planned depth. A 2- to 3-inch layer is common for many landscape beds, but product type, existing mulch, slope, and plant needs can change the target depth.

Bulk mulch or bags

Bulk material is usually sold by the cubic yard. Bagged mulch commonly comes in 2 or 3 cubic-foot bags. Compare delivered bulk cost with bag quantity, handling, and leftover material.

Example

A 20 ft × 10 ft bed at 3 inches deep needs about 1.85 yd³ before waste, or approximately 2.04 yd³ with 10% added.
