How the decorative stone estimate works

The calculator multiplies project area by finished depth, adds the selected allowance, and converts the volume to cubic yards. Weight comes from the editable loose bulk density. Bulk purchases round up to your supplier’s ton increment, while bagged purchases round up to whole bags.

Volume: area ft² × depth in ÷ 12 ÷ 27
Weight: volume ft³ × loose bulk density ÷ 2,000
Purchase quantity: add the visible allowance, then round up to the selected ton increment or whole bag

Stone density varies by product

Natural stone type, particle size, voids, moisture, and handling change bulk density. The material choices are planning starting values, not product specifications. Replace the displayed density with the quarry, landscape yard, or bag manufacturer’s value whenever it is available.

Bulk stone versus bags

Landscape yards commonly quote decorative stone by weight or volume, while home-improvement stores sell whole bags. Current US retail listings show that 0.5 ft³ is a common bag volume for river rock, but products also use other package sizes. Enter the dry volume printed on the exact bag instead of estimating from bag weight.

Worked example

A 10 × 10 ft bed at 3 inches deep contains 25.00 ft³, or 0.93 yd³, before extra. With river rock at 100 lb/ft³ and 10% extra, the estimate is 27.50 ft³, 1.02 yd³, and 1.38 US tons. In 0.25-ton increments, order 1.50 tons; in 0.5 ft³ bags, buy 55 bags.

Before ordering decorative stone

  • Use finished coverage depth and measure separate zones individually.
  • Confirm product density, bag volume, delivery minimum, and purchase increment.
  • Allow for settling, uneven grades, edging, and stone migrating into adjacent areas.
  • Do not use a decorative-stone estimate as a structural base design; use the project specification for load-bearing work.

Current US references: EARTHESSENTIALS by QUIKRETE river rock listing and Vigoro river pebble listing identify 0.5 ft³ bag volume; USGS crushed stone information explains the broader US aggregate context. Product availability and specifications vary by region.

Stone calculator FAQ

How many bags of stone are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. A 0.5 ft³ bag gives 54 bags per cubic yard before extra and whole-bag rounding.

How much does a cubic yard of stone weigh?

Multiply the loose bulk density by 27. At the editable 100 lb/ft³ river-rock starting value, one cubic yard weighs 2,700 lb, or 1.35 US tons. Use supplier data for the selected product.

How deep should landscaping stone be?

Depth depends on stone size, the desired appearance, site conditions, and application. Enter the finished depth specified for the selected product and project rather than relying on a universal rule.

Is this the same as a gravel calculator?

No. This page is designed for decorative landscape stone with product-specific density and bag volume. Use the Gravel Calculator for driveway, drainage, and compacted aggregate projects.
