Sod Calculator
Estimate whole sod pallets, pieces or rolls, purchase coverage, waste, and optional cost from lawn dimensions.
Estimated order quantity
0 pallets to buy
- Pallet coverage
- Piece or roll coverage
- Waste and rounding
- Grass type, delivery, pallet deposits, soil preparation, installation, fertilizer, labor, and taxes are not included.
Planning estimate only. Verify product specifications, site conditions, and supplier purchase increments before ordering.
How the sod estimate works
The calculator finds the net lawn area, adds the selected waste allowance, and divides by the supplier’s pallet coverage. Pallets and pieces are rounded up independently to whole purchase units.
Pallets to buy: round up[net area × (1 + waste) ÷ pallet coverage]
Pieces or rolls: round up[net area × (1 + waste) ÷ piece coverage]
Use your supplier’s coverage
Sod dimensions and pallet coverage vary by grass, farm, region, moisture, and harvesting format. A current Lowe’s listing shows a 500 ft² pallet, while University of Georgia Extension notes that some common Southern pallets are about 450 or 500 ft² depending on grass type. Replace both starting values with the specifications on your quote.
Worked example
A 50 × 30 ft lawn measures 1,500 ft². With 5% waste, plan for 1,575 ft². At 500 ft² per pallet, buy 4 whole pallets, providing 2,000 ft². If each roll covers 10 ft², the piece estimate is 158 whole rolls.
Before ordering
- Break irregular lawns into simple shapes, total their areas, and subtract beds or paving.
- Confirm grass cultivar, piece size, pallet coverage, minimum order, delivery charge, and pallet deposit with the supplier.
- Coordinate delivery with soil preparation and installation; sod is perishable.
- Fit edges tightly without stretching, stagger joints, and follow local extension and supplier watering guidance.
- Verify sunlight, drainage, soil, season, and turf suitability for the site before purchase.

Sod calculator FAQ
How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?
There is no universal pallet size. Current examples include 450 and 500 ft², and formats vary by grass and region. Enter the exact supplier coverage.
How much extra sod should I order?
Five percent is a practical starting allowance for simple rectangular areas. Curves, numerous obstacles, slopes, and complex cuts may justify more. Confirm the allowance with the installer or supplier.
Why does the pallet result include so much extra coverage?
The calculator rounds to whole pallets. Ask whether the supplier sells individual pieces, partial pallets, or smaller quantities when the rounded pallet coverage is much greater than the planned area.
Should I calculate pieces or pallets?
Use the unit the supplier sells. The page shows both as planning checks, but independently rounded results are not meant to be added together.
