Flooring Calculator
Estimate flooring boxes, purchase coverage, underlayment rolls, perimeter trim, waste, and material cost.
Estimated order quantity
0 flooring boxes
Planning estimate only. Verify product specifications, site conditions, and supplier purchase increments before ordering.
How the flooring estimate works
Measured floor area is increased by the selected waste allowance. The result is divided by the exact coverage printed on one flooring box, then rounded up to a whole box. Purchase coverage reflects full boxes, not a fractional estimate.
Boxes: ceil[flooring needed ÷ coverage per box]
Waste and layout
Five percent may suit a simple straight installation in a square room. Ten percent is a common planning allowance. Diagonal layouts, varied plank lengths, matching patterns, stairs, and irregular rooms may require 15% or more. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Worked example
A 15 × 12 ft room is 180 ft². With 10% waste, plan for 198 ft². If each box covers 23.68 ft², purchase 9 boxes, providing 213.12 ft².
Underlayment and trim
Underlayment is based on measured area and whole-roll coverage. Perimeter trim is based on room perimeter plus the selected trim allowance; subtract door openings or existing trim when appropriate.
Planning notes
- Use the exact net coverage printed on the selected box.
- Confirm whether underlayment is attached or required by the product and subfloor.
- Keep spare material from the same dye lot for repairs.
- Verify moisture, flatness, expansion gaps, transitions, stairs, and local installation requirements.
Flooring calculator FAQ
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Ten percent is a practical starting point. Simple rooms may need about 5%, while diagonal or complex layouts may need 15% to 20%.
Why are boxes rounded up?
Flooring is normally sold only in complete boxes. The calculator rounds to the next box so the purchase covers the required area.
Does the result include closets?
Only when their area is included. Add closets and connected areas in the additional-area field.
