How the deck material estimate works

The calculator divides the deck width by the actual board width plus the entered gap, then rounds up to a whole board row. It converts those rows to linear feet, adds the visible waste allowance, and rounds up to whole stock boards. Joists are counted from the deck length and on-center spacing, including both outside framing lines.

Board rows: ceil[deck width in inches ÷ (board width + gap)]
Deck boards: ceil[rows × deck length × (1 + waste) ÷ stock length]
Joists: ceil[deck length in inches ÷ joist spacing] + 1

Framing quantities are planning estimates

Rim-board, beam, and post counts help with early budgeting; they do not size structural members. Beam boards equal beam length multiplied by the selected rows and plies, rounded to the joist stock length. Post counts use the entered spacing along each beam row. Footings, ledger hardware, hangers, blocking, guards, stairs, flashing, connectors, and concrete are not included.

Board spacing, joists, and fasteners

Actual gaps and framing spacing depend on the decking product, board orientation, temperature, species, loads, and local code. Manufacturer instructions take priority. Face-fastener estimates use two screws at each board-to-joist crossing; hidden-fastener estimates use one clip. Both add 5% and round to whole boxes.

Worked example

For a 16 × 12 ft deck with 5.5-inch boards, a 1/8-inch gap, 16-inch on-center joists, 16-ft deck boards, and 10% waste, the estimate is 26 board rows, 29 deck boards, 13 joists, 5 rim boards, 3 beam boards for one 2-ply beam, 4 posts at 6-ft spacing, and about 710 face screws (3 boxes of 350).

Before purchasing

  • Confirm actual board dimensions, available stock lengths, gapping, and fastener requirements with the selected manufacturer.
  • Have joist, beam, post, footing, ledger, guard, and stair design checked against current local code and site loads.
  • Break irregular decks into rectangles and account separately for picture framing, diagonal layouts, stairs, and breaker boards.
  • Use corrosion-resistant connectors and fasteners compatible with the lumber treatment and exposure.

Deck material calculator FAQ

Does this calculator size deck joists and beams?

No. It estimates purchase quantities from spacing and stock-length inputs. Structural sizes and spans require product data, local code, design loads, species and grade, connection details, and site conditions.

How much decking waste should I add?

Ten percent is a practical starting point for a simple straight layout. Diagonal boards, picture frames, short stock, defects, and complex cuts can require more.

Are stairs and railings included?

No. Calculate stairs, guards, handrails, fascia, skirting, and their hardware separately.

Why are joists counted from deck length?

This calculator assumes deck boards run parallel to the entered length, so joists cross beneath them and are spaced along that direction.
